Special Guest and Giveaway!

Ohmigosh, friends!  We are beyond excited to announce a very special collaboration with the adorable and talented (and adorably talented) Nicole Cicak!   Nicole will be sharing her magic over here on The Stylish Adventures of Coco & Colette in a number of ways, and one of them is to provide you, our dear and loyal readers, cute and stylish tech wallpapers!  (You know, the wallpaper you set as your backdrop on your phone and computer...)

Coco & Colette snagged Nicole for a quick interview before she, her husband, and pooch packed up the van to move from Columbus to Chicago.  We wish them the best of luck getting settled!

Enjoy the Q & A, and perhaps you'll find, like we did, that Nicole and we are kindred spirits, joined in our love for Emily Henderson, The Everygirl, Jess Lively,  Audrey Hepburn, and designer fashion.

Meet Nicole Cicak

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you landed in your career as a graphic designer and illustrator.

My parents are from the Chicago suburbs, but I guess I grew up in many different places. As a kid, I moved around a lot. It’s probably the reason I have so much trouble sitting still as an adult. I’m always looking for the next adventure!

When I was young, I enjoyed anything that involved creating something with my hands - coloring, baking, building forts, playdoh. I had a wild imagination, and still do. My three younger siblings can attest. I always had some insane game cooked up for the day. I was crazy!

I attended high school in Cary, Illinois, where my parents still live. After that, I attended college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where I studied marketing and communications. After college, I just couldn’t stomach the idea of not doing something creative with my life. I made the decision to attend the Chicago portfolio school for an extra year to study Art Direction.

After school, I married my college sweetheart and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he was currently working. In Columbus, I landed a graphic design position at Wendy’s (yes, the fast food chain!). I worked there for 4 years, and started to think about freelancing full-time. I loved the idea of being in control of how well I did in my career. If I really hustled, I could do really well!

I’ve been freelancing for a year now, and haven’t looked back! I absolutely love it, and I feel like I’ve found my calling. I especially love how I’ve been able to focus more on illustrating, because I’m now able to make my own schedule!

If you could have a cocktail with a famous person, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you drink?

I absolutely love this question! If I could have a cocktail with any famous person, dead or alive, it would be Audrey Hepburn. I absolutely love her style and grace. We would drink champagne because it always makes me feel like I’m celebrating something. And this meeting would truly be something to celebrate!!

Who are your inspirations?

My inspirations...WOW this is a tough one because I have so many!! As far as illustrators go, I love the work of Georgiana Paraschiv, Mattias Adolfsson, Tim Burton, Anna Bond, Daniela Dahf Henriquez, and Cat Coquillette. All of these artists have work that is imaginative, witty, and simply stunning.

As far as other inspirations go - I love Emily Henderson’s interior design and Audrey Hepburn’s style. My favorite blog is The Everygirl. My favorite podcast is The Lively Show by Jess Lively.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received?

The best piece of advice I ever received was from my dad. He’s always told me I can accomplish anything I want in life. I feel like most of us hear that as kids, and then stop hearing it as we get older. I never stopped hearing it, and it’s given me the courage to take risks to achieve what I want.

What are your favorite qualities that Coco & Colette embrace?

There’s so much I love about Coco and Colette. Given my wild imagination, I love the colorful, imaginary story these two friends share. I almost feel like I could be their third wheel, and I would love every second of it. My favorite qualities that Coco and Colette embrace are friendship, great style at any age, and taking risks. I love how these two characters perfectly capture the idea that style isn’t only about the outfit. It’s a way of life.

What is your favorite fashion board from the Coco & Colette archives?

My personal favorite fashion board is the Black, White and Denim board. 90% of my wardrobe is black and white, and I LOVE black and white polka dots and stripes. I want everything on the Black, White and Denim board to get in my closet immediately!

What are a few of your favorite things?

Polka dots, puppies, sharpies, coffee, the color green, rain, lipstick, glitter, and pancakes.

What advice would you give to those just starting their careers?

Have the courage to follow your dreams. People will tell you over and over again that you can’t make a living doing what you love. They are so wrong, and they’re only telling you that because they once decided they couldn’t.

In the world we live in, we have so many resources available at the click of a mouse. You really can accomplish anything. You just need to be prepared to work harder than you’ve ever worked before, and to fight for what you really want out of life.
